Upon completing your legal secretary training and gaining your qualifications you can now start applying for positions in law firms. But it is important that before you do start applying for any legal secretary jobs you find out some more about the kind of duties you will be tasked with. 1. Organizing and Planning Schedules - Lawyers and attorneys are extremely busy people and their time is of a premium to them. So they are going to need someone who can make sure that when their schedules are being planned and organized time is used to its optimum each and every day. This is extremely important as these people charge by the hour and they need a legal secretary who can best evaluate how their time is used.

2. Preparation of Legal Documents - Both internally and externally there are many documents that will need to be prepared by a law firm and generally it is the secretary or the legal administrative assistant who will be tasked with ensuring that these are done correctly. But be aware the kinds of documents used and the way they are completed will vary from one law firm to the next.

3. Filing of Legal Documents ? If the case in which the lawyer or attorney you are working for is going to court then there is going to be a large amount of paperwork involved. It is generally the secretary?s responsibility to produce and then submit these forms for the lawyer or attorney they are working for. It requires meticulous attention to detail and also need to be very accurate indeed. Plus the lawyer needs a secretary he can rely on and who they can trust to ensure everything is filled in correctly and filed on time.

4. Preparing For Trial ? Although much of the research that is involved in trial cases is the responsibility of the lawyer, there is a considerable amount of preparing to be done and this is something that the legal secretary will do. It is important therefore that not only do they have a basic understanding of law but are willing to learn more about it. 5. Doing Research - Precedents make up a very important part of any legal process and so the need for good quality comprehensive research to be done. As generally a lawyer or attorney's time is somewhat limited then they will need to rely on their secretary or legal administrative assistant to do this for them.

6. Maintenance of Files and Typing of Correspondence - These are usually the more menial tasks which a legal secretary is required to carry out, but one who has good typing and organizational skills is going to be a secretary who is in demand. As there is so much legal documentation to be completed along with correspondence to be sent to keep clients informed a major part of the day is spent with typing and maintenance of files.

Along with all the tasks we have mentioned above another role that is vital and which any legal secretary will need to do is the greeting of the lawyer?s clients. It is crucial that the secretary they employ is able to interact with their clients in a professional manner because such proceedings can be very important to them.
