PUBLIC RECORDS- as the word speaks for itself; they are information that is made available to anyone who needs it. Although there is some information that is kept confidential by court, most of it can be viewed by the public.
Cases and court hearing are generally open for interested people to see. Although there are also some exceptions to the rule like juvenile and adoption cases that are made confidential by law. But records on most court hearings are always available in the clerk's office. Of course you would need to know which case records you want to see by providing the case types, names of persons involved and docket number (which is most helpful).
If you are handling your own case, studying records on similar cases would help you get an idea on the court processes and paperwork.
Court documents cannot be taken out of the premises. But in case you want personal copy of the information, photocopy machines are available to you for less than a dollar.
If you do not want the hassles of going to your local courthouse, updated federal court documents can be accessed online. Although access to such information would require subscription or registration fees.
If you don't want to spend money, the same online service can be accessed in the U.S. District Court clerk in Pleasant Street, Concord. Older documents though are not available online but can still be accesses in regional warehouses where they are stored. Online access to court records is only limited to local courthouses and state documents are available in hard copies. Audio recordings of hearing can even be available to you through advanced arrangements.
Aside from local court records, Supreme Court rulings, some orders and recordings are also available online thru the state court's website.
