There may have been times when you have been refused a loan or you have been charged a much higher rate than you expected.
There is a reason for this and it has something to do with your credit history. Most people do not have an idea about their credit rating. They only get to hear of the credit reports when they find it a problem getting loans and other credit. What you should know is that banks and other lending firms will base the lending on the way you have managed your financial affairs in the past and they see if you are a defaulter. Even if you have a judgment in the county court, it will show up on your credit report. They first make sure that you have the ability to repay, before lending you the money.
If some bank has refused a loan to you, you have the right to speak to them and find out. If they give you the name of the agency they have used to check your credit history, you can call that agency and see if they have gone wrong and even ask for a copy of the credit report, and you may have to pay a small fee for it.
Once you get the records in hand, go through them carefully and if there is a discrepancy, you can write to the agency and ensure they make corrections.
You can even add an explanation for anything if you wish to on your file and anyone who sees the problem will also be able to read your explanation, ensuring they understand the problem, without saying that you have defaulted.
Your loan may also be refused if you had problems with money in the past. Sometimes, a loan can be refused just on the basis of you not living at the address given on the credit report. This is the reason, it becomes very important that you keep checking your credit reports and keep them updated.
