Protecting Your Kids from Predatory Emailers

It's hard to remember how kids managed to learn anything in school in the days before the Internet. Today's students have access to information on every conceivable topic as close as their PCs, and are now capable of learning at an astonishing rate.

But Internet-savvy kids not only have access to information which can help them with their studies; they have access to dozens of social sites where they can hook up with the friends with whom they would otherwise be spending hours on the phone. Thanks to sites like MySpace, Imbee, and Friendster, kids from all over the globe can interact, sharing their personal information and even photos of themselves.

But even kids who are too busy to build relationships on social networking sites can still communicate with one another via email. Email, in fact, is the most used form of online communication because it transmits information instantly, and allows its users to store their correspondence indefinitely. One of the biggest drawbacks of email, however, is that could allow strangers to strike up relationships with your kids.

It's a sad reality of the online world that predators take full advantage of their anonymity to seek out and develop relationships with kids. While your son or daughter may believe he or she is sharing personal information with a kid of the same age and interests somewhere else in the country, the person receiving that information could be a sex offender communicating form an Internet caf in your own community.

This is an extremely scary situation and idea to think about, but it happens all the time. The more you know, the easier it is to ensure the safety of your children. If your child is getting strange emails or is conversing with someone online that you don't know, it might be worth checking out.

You can first talk to your child and find out where they began talking to this person. Predators often search for children who have low confidence or a low self-esteem. This is one of the ways they trap children; they work to earn your child's trust, and they exploit that trust.

But there are now, thanks to the Internet, ways in which you can fight back and protect your child before tragedy strikes. Thanks to several Internet websites, parents can now learn the identities of people who are emailing their kids, and the only think you need to use these sites is their email addresses.

By typing in their email address, you can find their name, address, phone number, and background records. These background records are extremely important because they contain arrest records for federal and state correction facilities. They also contain the facts about misdemeanors and felonies this person may have been convicted of, and whether or not they are a sex offender.

Parenting is never easy, but it will be the most fulfilling thing you ever do. So become involved in your kids' online world, and do the same job of protecting them there as you do every day by working to give them a safe and happy home!
