The reason behind this is artwork helps to make a great interaction with the fans in front of the curtain and the actual participants. There are various lists and surveys that have been done regarding the best album covers of all time, and a few in particular that always top the lists are: Blues for Allah - Grateful Dead, Yessongs - Yes, Relayer - Yes, Over-Night Sensation - Zappa, and Physical Graffiti - Led Zeppelin. It is important to realize here that not only is the actual album cover itself, what you see, important, but so is the inside of the album cover, where the lyrics of the recorded songs are usually displayed. Elton John's 1973 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road CD, for instance, was very popular for its pictures that accompanied each song on the lyrics sheet.
Rebels
There are some bands that acts as revolts to the consistency and wants to be away from crowds. Take Hard-Fi band as example, the album was launched to the market without any cover picture or artwork. The event created lot of negative impact at the beginning, but marked as a newly created trend.
Their admitted purpose here was to break the rules of an increasingly digital market in which the album covers often actually seem to be of more importance to some people than the music that is actually inside. Either way, even if the 'trend' does not catch on, it was a very innovative and successful marketing tactic in its own right, and the band has definitely gained new listeners due to the controversy started over this alone.
